Washington, 20 March 2025 – The Pentagon has confirmed plans to cut 50,000 to 60,000 civilian employees, representing approximately 5% to 8% of the Department of Defense’s total workforce. This move aims to improve efficiency and optimise defence budget allocation.
According to Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, the reduction will be carried out through several measures:
Voluntary resignations: 21,000 employees have already opted to leave.
Hiring freeze: Vacant positions due to retirements will not be filled.
Termination of probationary employees: 5,400 workers will be let go.
The Pentagon has assured that this reduction will not compromise military readiness but will instead ensure resources are used more effectively.

This downsizing aligns with the efforts of President Elon Musk’s adviser through the Department of Government Efficiency, which advocates for cuts in the federal workforce to enhance government productivity.
However, the move faces resistance from labour unions and legal challenges regarding the termination of probationary employees. Despite these obstacles, the Pentagon remains confident that the reductions can be managed in a controlled manner without compromising national security.
